By Ben Kingsley

Since the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, Minnesota Criminal Records have been opened to the public. This was done to promote awareness among the people of the state especially now that criminals are everywhere. By making it a public document, residents of the state can request it whenever they need it.

The primary use of such document is to conduct a background check. Such document is used to verify the criminal history of an individual. This is true for those who wish to know about their caretakers, tutors, babysitter, friends, neighbors, as well as relatives. By doing this, individuals would know who they can trust. This makes them feel safe and secured in their company. Employers also look into the criminal records of their people to make sure that they have qualified and trustworthy individuals working for them. The background of potential applicants is also checked and eventually, the company can avoid problems from arising in the future. The local authorities and investigators also checks on the criminal record especially if the individual has been involved in a certain incident.

Criminal records highlight the details about the offenses and crimes that an individual has been reported for. If there were charges filed against the individual, it would also be indicated on the document along with the sentence that the person has received. The document is not complete without the real name of the reported individual. One can also find the details of the person's physical attributes. If the individual has any significant body markings such as tattoo, scars, birth marks and other markings, it is carefully described on the document.

In order to get a copy of a criminal record in the state of Minnesota, one has to know the basic details of the record that is being requested such as the name on the file, crimes and offenses committed and the place and date when the individual has been reported of such crimes. This information has to be indicated on the request form along with the contact details of the one who filed the request. The document is only given or released if the one who requested it is the person himself or an immediate family of the owner of the file, otherwise a special court order has to be provided to gain access to the file. An $8 printing fee has to be paid per copy but this fee does not cover the service charges and other fees.

The criminal records of Minnesota are handled by the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The office is also responsible for providing a copy of criminal records to the residents of the state. The said office also accepts mailed request but it usually takes several days for the results to be sent back. Mail request can cost a little higher than the traditional method.

The Internet has allowed the retrieval of public crime records easier than the traditional methods. It is a convenient process since the document can be requested even at home. Residents can get it for free but many still want to pay for research to make sure that they only get quality results.
