Great Ideas To Up The Ante On Your Web Design

By Syble Gers

If you want to design a website as a hobby, for your business or even as your own career, a solid foundation of knowledge will help you get your foot in the door. From learning HTML to knowing search engine optimization techniques, there are many facets to web design.

Learning what it takes to design cleanly and efficiently is your first step, so continue reading for some tips which will teach you just that.

Make it easy for visitors to back out of a process if they change their minds. For example, put a "clear" button on a form, an unsubscribe link on all newsletters and a "cancel" button on orders. You will inevitably lose repeat customers if you force them to follow through on a purchase that they have decided against for now.

Although it is common to see the www. at the front of a website URL, you should try to make sure that you can access your site whether you choose to include it or not. This will make it much easier for anyone to access regardless of how they type it.

Don't disable the visitor's right-click functionality. Some sites do this in order to prevent people from copying and pasting text or saving images from the site. The thing is, it doesn't work and disables other useful functions. OCR can be used to capture text from such sites, and grabbing images is as simple as taking a screenshot.

To get repeat visitors, use an e-mail newsletter. Letting customers subscribe to updates and new information can keep them coming back. Put the form for signing up in a prominent location, such as a sidebar, and use it to compile a list of visitors who opt in to your newsletter. Make sure the newsletter only goes to those who actually asked for it, or you're going to get some serious blowback.

Separate your topics. If you have several topics of discussion on your site, put them on different pages. This helps alleviate any confusion that your customers may experience, as well as giving search engines a broader and more clear view of your site, potentially bumping you up higher in their rankings.

Keep your education ongoing. Websites are constantly changing, every day, and if you stop learning new things, you may find yourself falling behind the pack with your designs. Try to convince yourself to learn one new thing each day, be it programming a new background, or a simple HTML setup. Step one was to learn how to build a site, and step two is to get down to work and create your design.

Don't forget to keep reading and learning so you're never left behind.
